It's 2010.

I can't quite get myself to believe it yet, but it's 2010.

I entered the New Year in good style: I spent the night with Katie and Hillzberry watching bad movies and drinking Mike's Hard Lemonade, pomegranate flavor. We watched Serendipity the Pink Dinosaur, Clash of the Titans, and My Little Pony: Firefly's Adventure, which is quiet possibly one of the shortest and most rushed movies ever made, plot-wise. We laughed a lot, ate delicious ice cream, and just generally had a grand time.

I honestly haven't done a lot of reflecting about 2009, or what I want 2010 to be. 2009 wasn't really a bad year, but I wouldn't say it was a good one, either. There were all kinds of complications with friends; confidence crashes; ridiculous amounts of stress; a whole lot of fears about the future. But there were good things by the truckload: new, good friends, introduction to a lot of really cool books and movies, interesting classes, my time in the dorms.

I think what I want 2010 to be about is best summed up by a magnet that has just appeared on my fridge (yes, really. I assume one of my mom's friends gave it to her, or she bought it herself.)

"Life isn't about finding yourself," it says. "It's about creating yourself."

With that in mind, my resolutions for this year are as follows:

1. I will take steps to plan for my future. "Future" and "adulthood" are two words that scare me a lot more than they probably should. When I think about graduating, I'm not excited: I'm just terrified. Career? That scares me too. Moving out of my house? Well, I'm looking forward to that, honestly, but I'm scared about it too. But I don't really do anything to calm those fears; I just keep being afraid. I need to be more proactive about seeking out opportunities, looking into grad school, checking out apartments in the area, things like that. Things aren't so scary when you research them and prepare for them.

2. I will be more cautious in how I spend money. I have always been kind of a frivolous shopper, and I've generally figured it's ok to be like that. But really? It's not. I need to maintain a more careful budget and keep saving money.

3. I am going to be a more focused writer. I made this goal last year, and I did a pretty good job of it most of the time, but towards the end of the year particularly I lost it. My goal was to write a little every day, to finish Incorporeal Form; that didn't happen. I wrote multiple drafts, and I certainly got to some good places with it, but it's still sitting here on my hard drive, incomplete. I showed myself that I can, in fact, write a little every day if I'm motivated enough, because I finished NaNoWriMo this year at 59,000 words. That was 111 pages in a month. If I can do that, I can surely do some better work on Incorporeal Form, too.

4. I am going to continue to get things done in advance. I procrastinated a bit last semester, but I really surprised myself by how much work I did ahead of time. It made the end of my semester a lot more relaxing: I had plenty of time to work on my numerous papers, and I'm really proud of most of the work I did. I got really stressed sometimes during the semester, and messed up on a few assignments, but generally I did pretty well. I want that to happen again for me this semester, particularly since I will be starting my thesis work. Eeek!

5. I will remember that it's ok to like what I like and dislike what I dislike, that I am free to do some exploring whenever I like, and that I do, to some degree, create my own reality. In other words, I will be more proactive about myself and my fears.

And if I ever start to fail at any of these goals, I will turn up "Almost There" so loudly that my windows will shake, sing at the top of my lungs, and dance around my room until I feel better and remember what these goals are about.

Happy 2010, everyone!

Huff Puff: Fangirling Days

We had an awesome fangirling/movie day at my house yesterday. Angie brought along SyFy's miniseries Alice for us to watch - I thought it was about time to see what the fuss was about.

I enjoyed it, but I wasn't nearly as impressed as almost everybody else seems to be. I'm really not a huge lover of Alice in Wonderland to begin with - it's never been my cup of tea (har), so I'm sure that decreased my enjoyment of the story. I liked both Alice and Hatter - Hatter has been getting an epic amount of flailing and love from my fangirl friends these days - but I was actually much more interested in the zany and slightly off-his-rocker White Knight, Charlie, and Jack Heart and his 'wicked' love interest, Duchess. Leave it to me to get attached to background characters/villains.

We also watched a 6-hour miniseries called The 10th Kingdom, which came out when I was maybe ten years old. I'd never seen it, but it was lots of fun. My favorite character by far was Wolf; he is, of course, a Big Bad Wolf type, and is the love interest for the unfortunately very dull Virginia, the protagonist of the whole story. Virginia also has the single most incompetent and idiotic father I have ever had the displeasure of encountering in fiction. I hated him violently. Our viewing, from outside my room, probably sounded something like this:

TONY (THE FATHER): *does something stupid*
Me: AAAARRRR! ANGIE!
Angie: I know. I know. *pats knee soothingly*
Me: ANGIE! I'M GOING TO KILL HIM!
Angie: GOOD!

5 minutes later...
TONY: *does something stupid*
Me: AAAAHHH! NO SERIOUSLY, I'M GOING. TO. KILL. HIM.

So I have promised to write Angie an epic fanfic wherein Virginia and Wolf are adorable and happy together; the prince, Wendell, and his event planner, Rupert, are also adorable and happy together; the Queen and the Huntsman also get in on the adorable and happy; and Tony dies.

I spent today visiting with high school friends; we sat and talked, played Uno Spin, and Apples to Apples, which is quite possibly the best game ever invented. I cannot recommend it enough for social gatherings. I rarely laugh so much as when I'm playing Apples to Apples. We also watched bits of "A Very Potter Musical", which can be found on YouTube.

Oh, the joyous life of a fangirl on break. It is a beautiful, beautiful thing. :D

Tomorrow we go to see Princess and the Frog (5TH TIME FOR ME. I LOVE THAT MOVIE MORE THAN IS PROBABLY GOOD FOR ME.) Huzzah dinner and a movie! I'm very excited.

Also, I spent some time messing around with my website and posted a whole series of connected flash fictions, collectively titled "After", about various fairy tale characters after their stories stop. I also started posting "The Date" over there and plan to get some of my lovely OTP, Grima/Eowyn, up there tomorrow. Give it a look: www.aurimynonys.weebly.com

Good night, all!

Everybody, testify!

Actually, this has nothing to do with REPO; I just said that to get your attention. *throws head back and laughs evilly*

AHEM. Anyway. I am working on a website for myself! You can find it here: http://aurimynonys.weebly.com/index.html

It is EXTREMELY incomplete at the moment, but I'm planning to spend a lot of time working on it over break. Check in and see what I'm working on whenever you like! I've got a couple of things posted, but not much yet. I'm still puttering around getting used to the formatting such-and-such. :D

Hope your holidays were all grand!

Characters/Pairings: Jafar/Maleficent; Hades/Maleficent; Hades/Persephone; Mickey Mouse, Aladdin, Prince Philip, OMC, Prince Naveen, and Dr. Facilier
Rating: T, just because.
Warnings: Crack-y pairings and a cliffhanger ending type thing, with a one-shot to follow sometime in the future.
Summary: Mickey is not very happy with the princes' failure and decides that something new is needed to fix the mistakes Aladdin and Philip made. Meanwhile, Jafar visits Hades in the Underworld to tell him about the date, but things get a little heated when Hades reveals that he too has an interest in Maleficent. Then someone they don't yet know makes them an offer they can't refuse.

Today I got a book I put on hold months ago, and had, in fact, forgotten that I'd put on hold. It's titled Lost in Austen by Emma Campbell Webster and is a "Create-Your-Own-Adventure"-style Jane Austen book.

My original response to this? FUCK YEAH.

My response to this after several hours of experiencing my very own Jane Austen adventure? Bu - whut?!

I love me some feminism, but WHUT?! )

I am at home, feeling sleepy, slightly crabby, and yet happy to be at home with a bunch of library books and my lappy. Some days, you just need to be home and take a deep breath.

Anyways, to relieve myself of the crappy mood, and because I've told myself I ought to get into the practice of reading and critiquing more fiction books because this will no doubt improve my own writing, I give you a book review. I'm not going to post this over at bookfails because I think two people have already reviewed it. Nonetheless, for those of you who aren't in bookfails and who read a lot - a review of Audrey Niffenegger's Her Fearful Symmetry.

There will be numerous spoilers under the cut, but I'm pretty sure you don't want to read this book anyway. )

TL;DR - if that's love and problem solving, then fuck it, I'm becoming a hermit.

I AM FREE. FINALLY AND AT LAST. CELEBRATORY DANCING AND CONFETTI THROWING STARTS NOW!

I think my finals generally went pretty well. I rocked my evolution final, and I'm sure I did well on my Classical lit. The one I'm really worried about is Greek, but usually when I worry too much about Greek it all turns out fine. Hopefully grades get posted soon so I can find out how I did.

I went and saw Princess and the Frog with Angie last night, and as it expected it was just as fantastic the second time. This morning in the shower I plotted a "Welcome to the Disney Villain Club!" Facilier fanfic, and I am WAY excited about it.

But first! To finish "The Date." And to get to all my request fics that I haven't gotten to yet, and do Christmas present fics. Incidentally, if anyone has a fic they would like to request as a Christmas present, do so! Requests are good for me. :D

In the works:
- Finish "The Date"
- Post "Yuletide", a Grima/Eowyn fanfic for Jareth's Genevieve
- Finish and post Genevieve's birthday fic
- Christmas fics for everybody
- Finish all the dang edits on "Storm" and start posting regularly again. I've abandoned that fic for far too long, and it calls to me.

I'm trying to work on a fanvid, too, but my DVD ripper hates my copy of ROTK for whatever reason, so unless I can get the Eowyn-Witch King battle scene and the Houses of Healing I may be screwed. Sad day...

Grima/Eowyn posts to start up again, now that intensive studying has stopped and I have more free time.

LOVE TO YOU ALL.

This should come as a surprise to no one. I'd totally snatch Grima out of LotR and spend the day with him. And it would be EPIC. I'd take him out to the fabulous pie place we have near my house and we'd talk Eowyn, Saruman, and the Rohirrim in general. Best day ever. :D

Because good fanfic deserves pimping.

The below list are my top pics out of the Grima/Eowyn fanfic on Fanfiction.net. I cut out a couple of chapter fanfics that I absolutely loved, but that have since been declared dead or just never get updated. I also didn't rec any fics that I felt needed grammar help or were lacking in some other way. For the fics I did rec, I have posted their summaries, along with links. M-rated fanfics will be declared as such so that you know in advance what you're getting into. That UST thing... it gets pretty intense sometimes. :D

I should preface this post by telling you that I love dolls. A lot. Quite possibly more than is healthy. I have a fairly large number of them still, for a twenty-one year old woman.

Some of my favorite dolls, of course, are fandom related. And a couple of them were beloved enough to join me at my dorm room. One of these, as you might expect, is an Eowyn. The other two: Princess Jasmine (my childhood hero) and Queen Amidala. They chill on a couch right next to my earrings.

And most of the time they stay up there too. But sometimes I still get the urge to play with them.

This is what happens when you hand me a Princess Jasmine doll with multiple costumes. )
